ITSM Online Service

Disadvantages of Using ITSM Online Services

ITSM stands for IT Service Management. Organizations integrate ITSM into their operations by aligning the services delivered by IT to the business initiatives of the organization. ITSM online services aim to deliver to the organization’s customers, potential customers, and the public at large the products and services that they produce satisfactorily.

4 Disadvantages of ITSM Online Services

A lot of advantages come with the ITSM online services but on the other hand, therein lies some disadvantages. This article will discuss four disadvantages of ITSM online services.

  1. All ITSM frameworks are not Compatible
  2. Some ITSM Frameworks do not support specific operating systems, web-based services, or cloud platforms
  3. Very few ITSM platforms offer good scalability
  4. An ITSM service may prove to be counterproductive in the long run

1.All ITSM frameworks are not Compatible

Organizations that use ITSM online services use pre-defined ITSM frameworks of standard processes and best practices to provide an approach that is disciplined and consequently implementing ITSM. Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is famously known as an ITSM framework.

There are however many more ITSM frameworks that an organization can use in its operations. The Forbes Insights survey has a list of thirteen ITSM services that an organization can choose to use. Some of the other ITSM frameworks that organizations could use are Kaizen, Lean, Service Integration and Management (SIAM)/ Multisource Services Integration (MSI), Six Sigma, ISO/IEC, DevOps, Business Process Framework (eTOM), Control Objectives for Information and Related Technologies (COBIT) and FitSM.

An organization should however keep in mind that not all ITSM frameworks are compatible. Some ITSM approaches may not be compatible with an organization’s software and IT-related operations. Such ITSM frameworks may include DevOps and this may be caused by the evolving technology.

It is for this reason that organizations should be careful to check if the ITSM framework they wish to use is compatible with the IT-related operations and software they use. If they already started using a non-compatible ITSM framework, the remedy would be to blend their IT approach with other compatible approaches. This would be the only way to cover up for the missing requirements.

2.Some ITSM Frameworks do not support specific operating systems, web-based services, or cloud platforms

This will again draw back to what the organization is already using. An organization needs to ensure that its operating systems, web-based services, or cloud platforms are compatible with the ITSM framework.

It is for this reason that an organization needs to do some thorough research surrounding the available ITSM services. As they do the research, it is advised that their IT department is involved or does the main search ITSM framework to use. This is just to ensure that the operating systems, web-based services and cloud platforms already put into use by the organization are compatible with the ITSM framework that it wants to be using.

3.Very few ITSM platforms offer good scalability

The definition of scalability is the ability of an organization to use a computing process or the production of the computing process in a range of capabilities. Good scalability is key as it contributes largely to an organization’s efficiency, competitiveness, quality, and reputation.

ITSM is the collaboration of IT services and business strategy in an organization. An organization must therefore ensure that the ITSM online service it integrates into offers good scalability to see it grow and compete effectively. It is for this reason that an organization must look out for the ITSM platforms

4.An ITSM service may prove to be counterproductive in the long run

Whatever an organization aims to incorporate in its operations is aimed at taking the organization to greater heights. It would therefore be a great disappointment to an organization if the ITSM services they chose to work with proved to be counterproductive.

An ITSM service being counterproductive means that it will not give the organization the results that they aimed at. The ITSM service would hence be a great hindrance to the attainment of the organization’s goals. Organizations should hence research the results that different ITSM services give and the different reviews given on their websites.

If an ITSM service has bad feedback from organizations that have used it or the organizations that have used it do not seem to grow or increase in their sales, that would be an ITSM service an organization should avoid. Instead, organizations should watch out for the ITSM services that increased sales and have positive feedback as well in their website reviews.

Conclusion

This article highlighted four disadvantages of ITSM online services. The four disadvantages are that not all ITSM frameworks are compatible, some ITSM Frameworks do not support specific operating systems, web-based services, or cloud platforms, very few ITSM platforms offer good scalability and an ITSM service may prove to be counterproductive in the long run.
